Dyed hair and headshots
Hello people of Reddit, iId like your thoughts…
I am a novice actor starting to look for work and roles in both theatre and film projects (with access mostly local indie projects at the moment). I am aware that an important part of submitting materials for auditions and casting calls is including a headshot. I have also read that having dyed/unusually colored hair is frowned upon in this business and may put one at a disadvantage casting-wise.
However, I really dislike my natural hair color and have been heavily dying my hair different colors for six years now. I know I need to get a headshot if I want to find work and I’m willing to dye my hair for roles, but I also want to know if I should just pick one color (ie: green) and stick with it for a while so I don’t have to get multiple headshots for every time I change it (I don’t have a ton of money) and avoid going back to my natural hair color.
- Is this a similar situation to having tattoos in the workplace where in older generations it was considered unprofessional but now it’s becoming less of an issue?
- Is this a case-by-case basis depending on each casting team?
- I’ve seen this topic vaguely addressed every once in a while and an article here or there, but I’d like to directly ask real people what their thoughts and experiences are with this.
Thank you!
Note: I recently just dyed my hair for a role and it will probably take a bit to get back to the color I want to present normally (Black to green).
