Recs for old time mom & pops businesses in NYC

Hey! I'm in NYC for my 5th visit next weekend, staying with friends in North Greenpoint.

I really want to experience some of the old New York, the bars, bakeries, delis, shops, and eateries that have been serving their communities for years. There was a 5th generation bakery that recently closed down that spurred me on with my mission. I'm well travelled (10th country this year ) and find a lot of new places are cut and paste wherever you are in the world, so I will try some places that are a la mode but I want to grab some very New York experiences. I'm already eyeing up a Guinness and a full Irish at Donovan's on the Sunday morning and Peter Pan's doughnuts is a short walk from my friend's apartment.

I'm a Brit who can't drive so I have no fear and infinite patience, with public transport so feel free to direct me to the most obscure corners of the city !

(Sorry if this post breaches community guidelines but I'm looking for more than just food)

Appreciate your thoughts
