Okay I know I know, this question has been asked a million times. I've done quite a bit of research on older threads about this and thought I'd reset the counter on when this question was last asked.
I have a Warwick Rockbass Corvette Basic 5-string with passive JJ pups from 2012 that I've been playing on for years. Honestly, I love the feel of it, the fret work is pretty good, it has an adjustable nut and bridge - nothing about it screams budget. Except the pickups. I feel like the current passive silver MECs are hard to dial in a great tone and pretty thin (even after adjusting height and new rounds).
I'm a steadily gigging musician on upright, but I've always felt like this bass isn't quite at the level like say an American Fender would be. I'm seeing more electric pop/musical gigs come in now and want to absolutely kill these.
So my question is, should I delve into the rabbit hole of pickup upgrades, and make this thing awesome with Nordstrand pups and upgraded electronics, or would I be better served by selling the damn thing?
I've been looking at the used market, and it looks like the prices on the newer Rockbasses have exploded (I paid ~$700 CAD in 2012 and they're now closer to $1000-1200). I might be able to sell this to cover the most of the cost of a new Sire V7 and go from there.
On another note, I've absolutely been vibed out by some musicians for bringing a "metal" bass to an RnB gig. Not sure what others' experience is here....
