Do people in your country also tend to view others mainly through power relationships?
Living in Korea, one thing I’ve felt about people is that relationships between individuals tend to be overly centered around power and hierarchy. I often felt that unless you managed to climb to at least the middle of that social ladder, you wouldn’t really be treated like a proper person. But these days, society has become one where it’s extremely difficult to even get onto that ladder in the first place, and because opportunities feel so limited, more people are becoming left behind. I think some of those people end up drifting toward the far right or, unable to cope with their frustration, even taking their own lives.
At the same time, I wonder if this is just part of human nature. Are other countries basically the same? I’m curious whether this excessive focus on hierarchy and power is something uniquely Korean, or if it exists everywhere to a similar extent.
