American job prospects after doing UK PhD as an American
Hello,
I am sure something like this has been asked before, but I am unable to find a recent answer, and I am honestly having a personal crisis about this issue. So, I recently did an Mphil in social sciences (to keep it vague) at Oxbridge. Now I have a phd offer to return in the fall, taking the year after the mphil to apply for programs. I have a few things I need advice on.
I will likely not have full funding, likely a strong partial offer. I plan on doing supervisions and applying for subsequent awards both for the support but also for boosting my CV/experience. Will not being a full funded student reflect poorly on my future efforts for a postdoc or teaching position?
This is my main crisis. I want to primarily teach at the university level in the US. I know I have to do research to boost my prospects, but I am also more concerned with obtaining a good position over ranking of the school. How will doing a UK Phd (especially at Oxbridge) impact my future academic job opportunities? Will I be less competitive and what do I do to overcome that hurdle?
I only realized I wanted to do a phd during my mphil. I did not get in to any american phd programs in this cycle. I am considering waiting and trying again, but I am also very very concerned about the funding landscape's impact on phds in my field. It is a big uncertainty if I would get in for a fall 2027 start.
Please keep this context in mind, as I am asking from a place of stress and anxiety. I genuinely appreciate as much thorough and helpful advice as possible. Thank you so much in advance.
