Charley is KING: A deep dive into the meaning of Clovis
I did some digging on the name of Charley Crockett’s newest album, Clovis. It turns out Charley managed to do something truly rare: he recorded at the legendary Norman Petty Recording Studios in Clovis, New Mexico. While the studio famously served as the creative home for Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, and Roy Orbison in the 1950s, it has operated almost exclusively as a museum for decades. By recording there, Charley and producer Shooter Jennings essentially woke up a piece of sleeping history, making him the first major artist to capture a full-scale project in those hallowed rooms in recent memory.
It’s easy to assume the title is just a nod to the location, but I discovered another layer thanks to my 13-year-old son, who is currently studying medieval history. "Clovis" was the name of a powerful medieval King. Interestingly, the town of Clovis was actually named after King Clovis I in 1909 by a Santa Fe Railway official's daughter who was studying the king at the time.
What I find most compelling is the name’s origin. It stems from the Old Frankish Hlodowig (or Chlodovech), which translates to "Famous Warrior" or "Famous in Battle." Given Charley’s long-standing battle for his own art, it’s a remarkably fitting title. The instrumental title track, "Clovis," mirrors this; it has a sweeping, cinematic, desert-noir beauty with a distinct medieval tension. It sounds like the musical resolution of a long journey—the point where the 'Famous Warrior' finally clears the canyon and sees the sun rising over his own vast frontier.
The song is truly a story told in sound. You can feel the tension and drama building in those first few minutes, but as the song progresses, the clouds seem to break and the music finds its victory. It’s the sound of someone who has fought their way through the labels and the industry 'machine' to finally reach the other side; it isn't just a song—it’s a sigh of relief and a triumphant win.
To me, this track—and the album as a whole—encompasses Charley’s journey as a sovereign artist. He has fought a massive battle for his ART, and his voice is the heart of that victory. This record feels like the ultimate win, proving he doesn't need a major label machine to tell him how to sing or how to release his music. He’s earned his crown. Charley is KING!
