Me and a former partner have occasionally had to choose between Lennie Law and Orders and stabler and Benson svus

I don't understand why high schools pick shows like

Caberet

Rent

Sweeny Todd

Carousel

Avenue Q

Chicago

Etc

All of the shows I have listed would require heavy editing or censorship in order to be produced by a high school. My question is why they pick these shows. Especially since there is plenty of family friendly material out there. Of course nothing is perfectly family friendly even Mary Poppins.
