The Morrígan and Oweynagat: what do the medieval Irish texts actually say?

With Samhain approaching, I’ve been looking into the connection between Ráth Cruachan, Oweynagat and The Morrígan.

What I found particularly interesting is that this connection appears in medieval texts.

In the Metrical Dindshenchas, the Morrígan is associated directly with the Cave of Cruachu, described as her “fit abode”.

Oweynagat, the Cave of Cats, is generally identified with this Cave of Cruachu, and separate Samhain traditions associated with the cave describe it as a passage to the Otherworld.

It’s interesting how these different strands of Irish tradition come together at the same place.

I’d be interested to hear if anyone has come across other early references connecting The Morrígan with Cruachan or Samhain.

Our Morrígan coin inspired by Irish mythology is now available after a successful Kickstarter

Hi everyone,

A few months ago we shared our Morrígan coin project here, and we’re delighted to say the Kickstarter was successfully funded. We’ve now shipped all of the backer rewards, and the coin is available for the first time through our Etsy shop.

The design is inspired by the Morrígan, one of the most compelling figures in Irish mythology, and explores three themes closely associated with her: Flaitheas (Sovereignty), Fáithis (Prophecy) and Bás (Death). It’s available in Antique Nickel, Antique Bronze and Antique Copper finishes.

This has been a real passion project for us, and we’d love to hear what you think of the design or which figure from Irish mythology you’d like to see featured on a future coin.

If you’d like to have a look, our Etsy shop is here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/CustomIrishCoins
