Joining Active duty for FAP during civilian residency
Hey everyone,
I’m wrapping up my first year of IM residency and recently got contacted by a recruiter about the FAP program.
One thing that caught my attention was the possibility of overseas assignments depending on branch and availability. I’m originally from Korea and my wife is from Japan, so honestly I’d be willing to sacrifice maybe 20–30% of attending salary for a few years if it meant being able to live abroad in Korea or Japan.
I spoke with a Navy NP captain who served in military for 10-20 years who basically told me that realistically I’d probably get stationed somewhere like San Diego first and then maybe get deployed overseas later once a position opens up.
For those with experience in military medicine:
•How realistic is it to get stationed in Japan or Korea as an IM physician?
•Does Navy really offer the best odds for overseas assignments?
•How much control do you actually have over location?
•Any major regrets or things you wish you knew before signing?
Would really appreciate any insight. Thanks!
