Joseph Bruce Ismay was the chairman and managing director of the White Star Line who was onboard the fateful voyage of the RMS Titanic. He survived after boarding Collapsible C. After the disaster, he was heavily criticized by the press and largely withdrew from public life. What I'm curious about is why he didn't do more to defend himself. Why did it seem like he simply accepted the criticism and retreated from public life? Why didn't he try to clear his name or explain his side of the story? I do think Ismay was treated somewhat unfairly. I can only imagine what he went through after surviving such a tragedy, and I understand why he chose to retreat from public life. I wonder if he could have done more to defend himself against the criticism. What do you all think? Why do you think Ismay chose not to publicly fight for his reputation?
