NY Appraisal Assistant License

I have a few questions on the NY Appraisal Assistant Licensure process and am wondering if anyone has had any experience recently:

- Where do I apply for the license? Is there an online application or do I mail them the application with the required docs?

- Do I need a supervisor? I already have one but I don't know where to put that information in the application form.

- I have a Massachusetts appraiser trainee license for which I already took the basic principles, procedures, USPAP, and supervisor-trainee courses in 2024. Do you think I need to retake these courses?

- Lastly, for the assistant level, is there an exam for which one needs to go to a testing center or can that exam be done online?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated! I tried calling the department of licenses in NY but they asked me to just email the questions.... there is no board of appraisers customer service number for me to speak to a rep...

Commercial Appraisal Career

Hi all,

Has anyone here moved out of appraisal and into a different career path?

I’m a CG appraiser, and one thing I keep running into is that there are only so many reports you can realistically complete in a year. At some point, earnings feel capped by pure production capacity — maybe 250 reports annually if you’re grinding hard, which is tough in itself.

Sure, you can hire trainees and scale that way, but I’m curious if anyone here has or know of someone who transitioned into something adjacent or completely different that offered more scalability or long-term upside. Would love to hear what paths people ended up taking.

I am thinking something more scalable, passive in some sense, and not just a factor of number of reports. Using the skills that I have acquired in appraising commercial properties, what could I possibly foray into?

Would love to learn!
