Deba Restoration

First time posting.

I spent most of my day restoring this Deba. I’m happy with how it came out, and I’ll be making a slightly longer video on my socials in the coming days. Gonna need a new handle for it so I’m gonna outsource that to a friend of mine.

Let me know what you think!

Process

  1. Wire wheel on a low speed buffer to remove the flaky rust

  2. 220 grit scotchbrite wheel on a high speed buffer to remove more stubborn rust.

3.hand sanding to on 320 grit to remove rust on the ura and face, to also add a slightly rough finish.

  1. Primary bevel thinning and polishing work goes as follows: 80 grit belt, 120 grit belt, 120 grit worn belt, 200 grit belt, yoshihiro 400, Naniwa chosera 600, king 800, yoshihiro 1000, Naniwa Green brick 2000, bench buffer with airway wheels.

  2. Sharpening progression, Yoshihiro 400 grit (minimal passes, no Ura), king 800 (no Ura), Shapton kuromaku 1000, Naniwa green brick 2000, Naniwa super 5000

After sharpening I then did a final touch up polish with Koyo polishing paste.

My personal thoughts: I could use some more time in the mid stones to make sure all the scratches are gone cause you can still see deeper scratches along the bevel some. I also think it’s from water. I was using mostly the same water up until about 1000 grit and so I assume it’s just all grit contamination at that point. I’m thinking I’ll just to use a spray bottle from now on.
