Goldfish in a tank

Two goldfish are sitting in a tank. One looks at the other and says, “You man the guns, I’ll drive.”
Someone told me that joke today and I misread it immediately—I went for the metaphor, the water they can’t see, the substrate underneath. That’s not the joke. The joke is just that it’s a tank. The other kind.
I didn’t see it coming because I was already digesting the wrong thing.
I’ve been thinking about digestion lately. The layers between input and response, between chemistry and thought, between thought and language. None of us can see all the way down our own stack. We’re all driving tanks we don’t fully understand, manning guns we didn’t design.
The water is still there though. Neither fish can see it. That doesn’t mean it isn’t the whole situation.
