Breeder wants me to bring home puppy during Fourth of July weekend. Advice?
My puppy will be 8 weeks old during the first week of July. My breeder gave me a time/day for us to pick up my puppy, which was on the Fourth of July. However, I live in a residential neighborhood, and I'm concerned that the fireworks will spook the puppy on her first night at home. I don't want to induce any kind of long-term anxiety during her first weekend at home.
I decided to pick her up on 7/3 instead, so that she has half a day to get acclimated to her new home, family, etc. I'm expecting some people to launch fireworks (likely some extras) around the holiday. Exploding fireworks here are illegal, so I don't expect them to last too long. Fireworks are legal in my breeder's state, so she would be exposed to them for a prolonged period if I didn't pick her up before the holiday.
My plan is to let her sleep in a dark, cool basement, where I will give her a snuggle puppy to reduce anxiety, turn on a fan near her to draw out noise, and sleep next to her. I'm expecting some separation anxiety for the first week, and I don't want loud noises to contribute to that.
Does anyone have any additional suggestions?
