I often see on American movies/shows that the house number is fixed to the front porch area of the house. This number is often high (in numerical terms) eg. 1160.

Does this mean there are over 1000 houses in the street?

EDIT: Thank you all for your input. Makes sense to use the numbers to break down areas and grids. In Australia we use suburbs and postcodes. Thanks again
