The Malfoid trend has been a pretty clear reminder that a lot of people, men especially, are genuinely hungry for romance, tenderness and being wanted, even though that desire still gets mocked. Seems to me the trend caught on in part because a lot of people are lonely, and the tsundere archetype has finally broken into a much wider audience.

Partially, what makes Malfoid work is that she is not interesting because she is simply a female Draco. She has many more conflicting desires in this new fanon; Pride, family duty, rivalry, affection, validation and the fear of rejection are all pulling her in different directions. She wants Harry to notice her while desperately hiding how much she cares. That tension gives people something much richer than a simple gender swap. It turns an old rivalry into a story about vulnerability, forgiveness, growth and two people slowly choosing each other despite everything telling them not to.
