Need help understanding USCIS case status update
Hello!
My employer recently filed the change of status form F1 to H1B for me on May 4, 2026 (not original H1B).
On May 13, I got the status update: "On May 13, 2026, we have cancelled the request for additional evidence for your Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker." I got the status update because I signed up for email notification for the case in USCIS Case Status website.
Then on May 14, I received another update: "Request for Initial Evidence Was Sent: On May 14, 2026, we sent a request for initial evidence for your Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker, Receipt Number XXXX. The request for evidence explains what we need from you. We will not take action on your case until we receive the evidence or the deadline to submit it expires. Please follow the instructions in the request for evidence."
The Next Steps section in the Case Status Page shows "We will review your response to our request and mail you our decision."
I am very confused. The cancellation came before the RFE. The next steps show that the officer received my response although I only got the notice in the mail today May 20 (it came to the office, the office admin scanned and sent it to me) and obviously I have not sent any documents yet. I have no trust in my company lawyer... she keeps saying conflicting things. Can anyone help with some insights? I'm trying to understand the standing of my case now, does the USCIS need or not need evidence from me and my company?
Thank you!
