Audiocular aura (Short Review)

To be honest, this is the second time I am buying the Aura. Not because my first unit died or anything, but because I lost my first unit. The main reason I got this was because of the price as compared to other dongle DACs with the same specs.

I got my unit for around 2100 INR. Btw, if you plan to get the Aura reviewer discount, it still applies. The one I used was from YouTuber "Lots of Tech," and the code was "LOTOFTECH."

The only other dongle DAC of this style I have used is the FiiO KA11. So I will be comparing it to the KA11.

The build for both DACs is very similar. That is to say, very good. Internal specifications are also similar. Both having the CS43131 + SGM8262 chipset. The Aura does have an upper hand as it also has the CB5100 chip, which allows for PEQ, which is something the KA11 does not support.

I won't get into the power outputs for both DACs because both are almost identical and it's more than enough power for, like, 99% of IEMs. The FiiO at 16 ohms is a little bit more powerful, though.

In terms of tuning. Both perform about the same. Both are close to neutral, which is what I prefer. In this price range implementation does not change much, really.

One thing about the aura is that it does not heat up nearly as much as the KA11. The K11 would get uncomfortably hot after a few mins of use. The aura also gets slightly hot. My K11 also dies after two months of usage because of internal cable fraying. I haven't had the Aura for as long, so time will tell for its long-term durability.

Overall it's a very solidly built DAC that competes with DACs that cost more than it.

TL:DR If you want a PEQ, go with the Aura; if not, go with the KA11 if you want something from a more known brand.

Also, you can peek at the aura on desktop using the Walkplay site. I tested this because the Aura and TRN Black Pearl have the same USB control chipset.

Letshuoer s12 ultra (One Month of use)

I got the S12 Ultra about a month ago now and its been great so far. I have tried a lot of planar IEMs before but the s12 ultra has to be one of my favorites. I never tired the original s12 but the did have the s12 pro for a while and comparing it to the pro the tuning on the ultra is much smoother. Bass in more punchy and the treble is not sibilant (most of the time).

Compared to the MP145 the stage on the ultra is on par or ever so slightly smaller than the 145. But overall tuning on the ultra is smoother and more refined. Bass texture and layering are better on the ultra too.

Comparing to the KZ PRX, its a U shaped sound and the tuning on that set is done will but the ultra being a warmer tuned set has more warmth to vocals which is something I missed on the PRX. Technical stuff like separation and layering are also better on the ultra. But not as much as I expected considering the price. Overall I think if you are looking for an upgrade to the PRX then the 12 ultra is a good step up.

Comparing to the S08, the ultra is more treble energy. The S08 is a very warm sounding set and sometimes looks like the upper treble is cut off completely. Which I am not a fan of. But for that particular tuning the S08 is good. The ultra has more treble energy without sounding harsh and the sound feels more contrasty and engaging.

Overall the S12 Ultra is worth the price in my opinion. This is not a full review but just comparing it to some other planar sets.
