24hrs with the SL1500C and 2m Blue
I've done a couple of question posts in the past on turntable and cartridge choices - so circling back on the direction I went and how I've found it now that I've listened for ~24hrs. I don't claim to have a perfect system/setup or have golden ears, just some average joe thoughts.
Turntable: I went for the Technics SL-1500C. I was tossing up some other options like Rega P3 and project debut pro, as well as the Technics 1210mk7. Ultimately went for the 1500 as I value the autolift/stop/off feature. I often listen while cooking, doing chores, or chasing the family so these are great QoL features for me. The TT has been rock solid for me so far, no issues or imperfections. The direct drive feels super snappy and steady. I swapped the rubber mat for an acrylic one I have which sounds much the same, but has cut the static a fair bit.
Cartridge: I've read pretty average/negative things about the 2M Red the 1500 comes with, so swapped it straight to the Ortofon 2M Blue. The Blue gets very mixed reviews also, but I thought I'd give it a go as it's a straight drop in. It was a bit 'bright'/sharp in the highs at first. It's either broken in, i've gotten used to it, or a bit of both. I wouldn't call it bright now, but is definitely neutral and clear rather than warm and rounded off. I'm perfectly happy with it. At some stage I'll likely pick up the ATVM95ML to try out; easy with the 1500's swappable headshells.
Phono Preamp is the Ifi Zen Phono 3.
Together: Together IMO these make for a low hassle, high quality, and reasonably priced TT setup. There will 100% be better setups out there. Im not saying it's the best, but maybe right for me, right now. The sound doesn't leave me wanting more, which I guess is good!
Bonus, how I'm tracking listening: I picked up one of these tally counters for $2. I keep it next to my record brush and give it a click per side. Each side is ~20mins (though can vary widely), so 72 clicks is ~24hrs. Took me 34 days for anyone interested. In 2928 clicks/1000hrs I'll be at ready for a new stylus 😂.
Rest of system: WIIM Ultra & AudioEngine HD6 speakers (on rubber vibration isolation spheres). Want to move to a seperates system asap, but waiting on a potential house move first.
