Best Field Experience

What is the most valuable field experience for a freshman civil eng. student? The goal is to eventually be a project manager that isn’t just a calculator engineer.

It’s too soon to apply for internships and when the time comes to be a FE I don’t want to be walking around the job site clueless.

Best field experience for CE

Currently at the beginning of my Civil Eng. degree and don’t qualify to be a field engineer yet but I want to get the best field experience that’s not holding a sign or digging ditches for a big GC.

Should I join the carpenter’s union or what would help me hit the ground running so I’m not clueless for my first construction internship?

Carpentry

Currently at the beginning of math and science courses and probably couldn’t get hired as a FE or PE so I was thinking of joining the carpentry union to learn building as opposed to holding a sign let digging ditches for a big GC.

I have an interview in 3 days for commercial carpentry installing metal studs. Would you consider this field work or is my thinking flawed and I should do something else.
