I'm forever baffled by the repeated advice to volunteer for projects outside your team at work.
I'm at a large global company, and usually by the time we hear about a new project it has just been completed and is in the BAU stage.
It probably doesn't help that we are a very small, fairly isolated team (certainly in the country I'm based).
On a related note, I have asked my contacts and manager about secondments and the like, but people seem to be a bit reluctant on the subject.
Does anyone have any concrete examples where this has worked out for them?
