Yesterday both myself and my wife received the same text message at the same time : AIB: A transaction of €187.20 to SAM'S CARPENTRY has been placed on hold. Your card is now frozen. Please call us on 01 592 2502 immediately.
As we don’t know Sam’s Carpentry and did not recall any transaction, and Banks will not send alerts like this via text, we have ignored the message.
However, I have been thinking about this :
- Maybe this is a message sent to a large number of AIB customers in the hope that some would fall for it.
- The more concerning one - this message was sent to us only - which means that someone outside AIB knows that our mobile numbers link to the same bank - and to me, that suggests a data breach at AIB.
Has anyone else received this message ?
