one week post iud insertion cramping
hi! i (f22, no children) got the mirena placed exactly one week ago & that was GENUINELY the worst pain i’ve ever been in. i had to lay on the table for 30 minutes before i could sit up, had to be wheeled out of the office, had tremors for hours after, and now every time i think about it i feel like i’m going to throw up. a little traumatizing, a little baffled that it’s 2026 & women’s health is still here.
ANYWAY, that’s beside the point. it’s been one week & i still feel cramping mild-significant discomfort on and off. i’ve definitely been taking far too much otc pain meds the past week and living with a heating pad attached to me. for parts of a day i’ll feel totally fine and then other parts will have cramping so bad i need to sit. i did get it inserted right before my period started & then have been on my period since. my periods are MISERABLE in the first place so i’m wondering if it could also be because of my period, though usually they only last 4-5 days (cramps ending after day 3) and this is day 7. it feels like period cramps paired with pressure in my hips and lower back.
i guess i just want to know if this is normal? when should cramping stop & when should i be concerned? i’ve seen online anywhere from 2 days to 6 months so i wanted to ask real people! i have a four week follow up in 3 weeks as well. thank you!!
tldr; had iud inserted 7 days ago and still having period like cramping, is this normal?
