I live in a property with a wooden floor (looks like white oak but I’m not sure) finished with Osmo Polyx-Oil 3011 Clear Glossy. A plastic sheet I had on the floor lifted some of the finish when removed, leaving several bare patches across roughly 4-6 square feet.

I attempted a DIY repair and made it worse:

First I tried hand sanding the worst bare patches with 240 grit to clean the grain and smooth the edges. It didn’t seem to do much so I used a 120 and then a 60 that seemed to remove the existing finish. Then I got a machine sander and did the entire affected area with 60, then 120 grit to try to even everything out. I then applied Osmo Polyx-Oil 3011 using a foam roller across the whole area.

The result is that the areas I hand sanded first are now visibly darker and more matte than the surrounding areas. Is this because they were sanded more times in total so the grain is more open and absorbed more oil? I don’t feel a physical step or raised grain when I run my hand across.

I’ve applied two coats so far. Applied first coat last night and waited 12 hours before applying another coat today but it didn’t seem to do much about the dark patches

Questions:

  • Will additional thin coats of Osmo even out the dark patches over time?
  • What can I do to fix this? I’m stressed, please help

Any advice appreciated. Thank you!
