I’m moving from Indiana to New York state for a 4 year residency program. A current PGY-1 told me he kept his car registered in his home state bc it’s significantly cheaper. He still has an out of state license plate and says others have done the same without issues. My chief said most residents also do this.

I currently have the privilege of being on my parents’ car insurance policy in Indiana but wondering if I’ll have to get my own policy when I move.

Should I register my car in NY and get the plates and the license or should I be good to keep it registered and insured in Indiana? Would I mitigate any risk by saying it’s primarily garaged in NY?
