S&W M&P 2.0 Competitor HD initial impressions

S&W M&P 2.0 Competitor HD initial impressions

I’ve put about 700 rds through it now, 500 with the original recoil spring and 200 with an upgrade to the DPMS system with the lightest and shortest spring.

I got it to have a good striker fired option for USPSA and Steel Challenge competitions, to compare to my current setup with my Shadow 2.

The gun is very flat shooting out of the box, and even more so with the DPMS, but I wouldn’t say it’s any flatter than the S2. It weighs about 40 ounces compared to 50 with my S2 so that extra mass on the S2 I think does a lot of heavy lifting (and so do I when I carry it, lol).

Its relatively accurate as well, as much as I can be with it, although I would say I have slightly larger groups than the S2.

Where it all falls apart comparatively is the trigger. The trigger on the M&P is comically bad. Possibly the worst trigger I have ever felt on any gun. There’s almost no wall, and the reset is a best guess (basically no tactile feel or click). I’ve already ordered an apex trigger to replace it, so hopefully that will take care of that.

Overall its a very nice gun and shoots better than every other striker fired gun I have owned (Canik TTI Combat, Canik Mete MC9, Glock 19 gen 4, S&W Shield X, Sig P365XL, to name a few). I don’t think it shoots better than the S2 though. I’m definitely shooting it at my next Steel Challenge competition and seeing how that feels, and make a call from there.

Guns on the table from left to right I shot today were the M&P, Shadow 2, CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow, and Shadow 2 Carry (my EDC).

Really liking this Kinghardcase

Picked up this 8 pistol and 28 magazine case from Kinghardcase to replace my 6 pistol Condition 1 case as I wanted a little more storage and room for more than just my guns and mags. I used to bring my Condition 1, plus an extra ammo box, plus a backpack to the range. Now just this.

In the right side we have 400 rds of ammo, speed loader, cleaning kit, tool kit, eyes and ears. Then I’m only using four of the six remaining pistol slots with the other two holding gloves, bandaids, and lead wipes.

I know some of you keen eyed people will be saying, you said it was an 8 pistol 28 mag case… the math ain’t mathin. The compartment on the right comes with a pre-cut removal foam piece that hold 2 additional guns and extra mags. I removed that though for more storage.

Now I just need to continue working out at the gym to be able to carry this behemoth. It easily weighs 40-50lbs. Lol

Oh the guns. Left to right, S&W M&P 2.0 Competitor HD, CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow, CZ Shadow 2, Shadow Systems DR920P.

New gun day. Gonna test this for competitions.

Smith & Wesson M&P 2.0 Competitor HD (steel frame).

I’ve been shooting a CZ Shadow 2 competitively, and I love everything about that gun, except for the first shot.

The requirement to decock and having to shoot the first shot in double action is definitely slowing me down and causing me to throw a lot of first shots low. I know I can continue to work on it and train that out, but I want to see what it feels like against a high quality striker fired gun.

I love the way this gun looks, and if it’s good enough for Hunter Constantine, it’s good enough for me. Excited to shoot it back to back with my Shadow this weekend.

I’m gonna try throwing a brass back-strap on as well to give it even more weight, and I’m throwing a Holosun 507 Comp on too.

Click, no boom? Tap and rack

I shot my second ever USPSA match today. I did okay, better than I did the first one, so I’m happy with there being progress.

I wanted to point out this clip though from one of my stages because I have really been focusing in my training on making it second nature to clear malfunctions.

I’m super happy with how I handled it in the heat of the moment here.

Everyone should practice this, whether shooting competitively or just for self defense.

I did a local mini competition and I won!

It was 5 stages, 8 competitors. I won 1, and finished 2nd in 2 others, then the winners of each stage faced off in a heads up match. It was roughly 7 yds, had to hit each bottle on your side twice, then the bowling pin, then first to hit the orange bottle wins. This clip was the finals and I took it down 💪🏻.

Outlaw Holsters will apparently put whatever graphic you want on a holster which is pretty cool. I went with this GI Joe emblem for my CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow with Cobra Commander grips from Lok Grips. It came out pretty good.

Today I got to train with a former SWAT team leader on moving and communicating while shooting. It was an awesome experience.

This drill was working on heel to toe movement going forward, and toe to heel movement going backwards, with communication to your team to move at the midpoint.

I keep finding these awesome training opportunities in the weirdest places. I found a guy who trained me to compete in USPSA from a gear review on YouTube and found out he offers training down the street from me.

This guy today was recommended to me while playing pickleball. Lol

Took off work early and took my Shadowy bois to the range for a face-off and to test out some new upgrades (cobra grips on 75, gas pedal on shadow 2).

Guns on the table pic from left to right and how I labeled them in the pics are: CZ Shadow 2 Carry with a Cyelee Cat EDG (S2C), CZ Shadow 2 Gold Digger with a Vortex Defender XL (S2), CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow with a Holosun 507 Comp (75), and a Shadow Systems DR920P with a Trijicon RMR (D).

All shots in the pic on the big target were at 40 feet. Bullseye target was at 20 feet. I think overall in terms of accuracy I would rank them from first to last as S2, D, 75, S2C.

So the story… I’m at the range and there’s only 2 other people there, a cop and an older gentleman, and we’re all pretty spread out and doing our own thing.

I get done with my session and I’m packing up and the old guy walks up to me and says “Hey you look like an expert, you’re shooting is RIDICULOUS. Can you help me?”I say, “Thanks man, of course, what’s up?”

He takes me over to his lane and tells me his gun is jammed and he needs help. He’s got a little .380 and he’s got a pretty nasty double feed going on. I drop the mag and have to manually pull it out because it’s pretty jammed in there, but it comes out relatively easy. The bullets both drop out as well. Problem solved.

He’s very appreciative and makes sure to tell me again he thought I was killing it on the range today.

Now I don’t consider myself an expert at all but I have put about 15 solid months of consistent training every weekend on the board. I know I definitely have improved in both my abilities and my understanding. It just felt really good to have that validated in some way by a third party and be able to help them out too.

Traded for the CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow with Cajun Gun Works Pro Package and Holosun 507 Comp last week. Every CZ Shadow requires Lok Grips, and just got these Cobra Commander grips delivered today. It fits in my lineup nicely.

I took it to the range and it’s such a soft shooter. That trigger from Cajun is really fantastic. I think I still like my Shadow 2 better overall, but it’s really close.

The Shadow 2 Carry is my EDC. I’m just living in CZ’s ecosystem right now and I don’t think it gets any better than this.
