I've got a really old, 1906 house in a wet climate (Portland, OR). Most of the windows are original single-pane and, y'know, they're super inefficient: drafty, fragile, lots of noise gets through, etc.

The previous owner nailed in weatherstripping and then painted them shut and we've left them that way because it does help a bit but I'm considering going a step further and adding storm windows on the outside. If I do it, I expect I'll leave the original windows painted shut and leave the storm windows on year-round.

Does anyone know whether that's a bad idea? My concern is that we could inadvertently trap moisture in there, between the semi-sealed original window and storm, and create a situation where mold or worse, rot, could form. Am I being overly paranoid?

Any experience anyone's got with adding storm windows to an old house would be appreciated! If you put em on your house, do you like having them? Do you leave them on or take them off seasonally?

Thanks in advance!
