DMing for beginner

Salutations,
I want to do something for my husband for our 9 year wedding anniversary so I was thinking of DMing a Dnd game for him. He loves to play, it’s not really my thing but he always asks me to. I have played with him in the past and now with three young kids, if I have free time, I’d rather do something else… But he is hard to buy for (not picky, just has everything he wants) and I think he’d really love and appreciate something like this. Our anniversary is around Christmas so I want to get started on my plan so I have plenty of time to learn what to do and make some things.
I have a loose grasp on the game, and we have some of the books but I’d like some guidance and/or resources on how to DM for a beginner. I would invite his normal group (bestfriend, cousin, and my sister) and maybe some of my siblings if they’re in town for Christmas to play. I don’t think they’re sticklers for the rules but I don’t know for sure. I could probably have them build characters before but how could I get his character done before? Not sure if its necessary but I know he always likes it done before they all plan to play.
My plan is to set a date and invite everyone (keep it on the dl so he thinks its just us for our anniversary), get a babysitter, get snacks and make a nice meal, maybe decorate, and surprise him with it all. I plan to make a map (I’ve drawn some for them in the past) and set up a “world”(?) and game. Obviously I have to learn how to DM for all this to work. If I’m missing something for my plan to work, please let me know.
Also is dnd always set in a medieval kind of world? My husband is really into that, I’d be more into a wild west, star wars, or maybe even harry potter kinda universe but I’m not sure thats allowed? He might be into a Marvel universe too but I’m not sure I could do that. If it has to be medieval, which I’ll probably do since he likes that best, I might do an adventure time kinda style (they like to be ridiculous and funny).
Any help would be appreciated! I have no idea what I’m doing
