Comprehensive Grammar of Kurmanji Kurdish -- Mustafa Durmaz

I've just learned of a recent doctoral dissertation comprising a comprehensive Kurmanji grammar in English that is now available.

The introduction and table of contents can be seen here, and copies in various formats can be ordered from the same website:

https://www.proquest.com/openview/a7f1de7752d7443541c8a38793732be5/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&cbl=18750&diss=y

As far as I'm aware, there hasn't been a full reference grammar available in English, although shorter grammatical sketches have been published. I would hope that this will become available as a formal publication at some point, but in the meantime, pdf downloads and hardcopies in various formats can be ordered from the website above.

I haven't seen the full dissertation yet, but am much encouraged by the table of contents, and wanted to pass on the information for others who might be seeking such a reference.

Audio for De Francis Chinese books

There are a number of (mostly older) posts discussing the Chinese textbooks and readers by John De Francis, with the apparent consensus being that despite their age, these materials are still very useful, especially in developing reading ability. The books seem to be fairly widely available, but finding the audio may be a problem, so I wanted to note, for anyone seeking the audio, that it was posted quite a few years ago on the old "How to Learn Any Language" forum. Although the original forum is now dead, an archived version was recently put up here: https://htlal-archive.siddharthagolu.com/ , and amazingly, the links to download (individually) the separate files for the De Francis books are still viable. You can find them here, about halfway down the page, posted back in 2013(!) by user "Crush":

Query regarding Sorani grammar book

Does anyone know anything about (or have a copy of) a Sorani grammar book entitled "Sorani Kurdi Kitebeke - Sorani Grammar Reference (second edition)" by Khalid Sabir and Pauline E Nichols, reportedly published in the mid-1990s? I've seen only one reference to it in a book and can't find any trace of it online.

I've just become aware of two recently published Kurdish textbooks in German, one for Kurmanji and the other for Sorani, and wanted to share information on them here in case others might be interested.

The Kurmanji book is "Grammatik der Kurdischen Sprache (Kurmanci Dialekt) und Verbkonjugationen" by Saydo Barnas, and is available in both hardcover and paperback. The website for it on Amazon.de is here:

https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Grammatik-Kurdischen-Sprache-Kurmanci-Verbkonjugationen/dp/3695110716/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1MCN9I6ATLW9F&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.BeOK2DF_uI8G969Hhq3uwV3MHbLz6Y9se_AaPmeu8nHR7BHrAthuMnp5jCzA9l7TSkBKxOyWhACqV9t3YPoq7P-16JnzDARxiGpsBiibIINr0axX154povjL8KQXdeMppImhAxSuYa8ISgi-OCy3C1oRrL4f7AChB79TmxPYASUVgmCHF2Rk183xXLD8QHO6sJX8FJEN6nhTMh5gRAYz1OVCP2G2dsQzGUBfobq1YkI.fOsZRlaBct-yZ53qI5Kb2-jZrFhF-pC5AuUVlcGVJG0&dib_tag=se&keywords=kurdische+sprache&qid=1777598551&s=books&sprefix=kurdische+sprache%2Cstripbooks%2C156&sr=1-4 and includes a "look inside" feature. (Looking at the book's table of contents in the online sample, it appears that the book is in fact more of a reference grammar than a textbook.)

The Sorani book is "Kurdisch als Fremdsprache (Zentralkurdisch/Soranî): Einführung in die kurdische Sprache Mit Grammatik, Übungen & Wortschatz" by Samal Osman, and is only available at present in a Kindle version. The Amazon page for it is here: https://www.amazon.de/-/en/Samal-Osman-ebook/dp/B0GMS4MWX7/ref=sr_1_16?crid=1MCN9I6ATLW9F&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.BeOK2DF_uI8G969Hhq3uwV3MHbLz6Y9se_AaPmeu8nHR7BHrAthuMnp5jCzA9l7TSkBKxOyWhACqV9t3YPoq7P-16JnzDARxiGpsBiibIINr0axX154povjL8KQXdeMppImhAxSuYa8ISgi-OCy3C1oRrL4f7AChB79TmxPYASUVgmCHF2Rk183xXLD8QHO6sJX8FJEN6nhTMh5gRAYz1OVCP2G2dsQzGUBfobq1YkI.fOsZRlaBct-yZ53qI5Kb2-jZrFhF-pC5AuUVlcGVJG0&dib_tag=se&keywords=kurdische+sprache&qid=1777598762&s=books&sprefix=kurdische+sprache%2Cstripbooks%2C156&sr=1-16 and likewise provides a "look inside".

I haven't seen a complete version of either book, and so can't comment on the contents, but I thought German-speakers seeking to learn Kurdish might find them of interest.

I'm not sure how many people are aware of it, but the "Zimannas" website https://zimannas.wordpress.com/ , which had been rather moribund for the past couple of years, now seems to be active again. It has a lot of articles on various Kurdish dialects, but especially Kurmanci, as well as links to assorted items, including full-length books, on Kurdish linguistic issues.

Although arranged like a blog, there's also a sort of online "journal", entitled "Kanizar" https://zimannas.wordpress.com/kanizar-hejmar-15/ which you can also download.

The most recent entry on the blog is a long (104 pages!) article on the verbs bûn and hebûn that you can also download as a pdf file: https://zimannas.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/lekeren-bun-u-hebun.pdf

This website is a very extensive resource, but doesn't seem to be all that widely known, hence my posting it here.

In the meantime, if anyone else is aware of other little-known sources of language-related materials, please share them.
