The Supreme Court recently handed down a massive W to ISPs like Cox by deciding they arent legally responsible if you decide to torrent the entire Disney catalog.

Shocking plot twist but the copyright lobby is absolutely malding over this. So naturally Congress is stepping in to save the poor defenseless billionaires and their solution is giving literal 1984.

Senator Tillis and Rep Lofgren are holding hands to push a unified site blocking bill. They unironically want to force ISPs and massive DNS resolvers like Google and Cloudflare to block foreign pirate sites by court order.

Because obviously forcing Cloudflare to play internet police is a flawless idea with zero potential consequences 😂

For anyone who wasnt chronically online during the ancient times of 2012 (get over it unc) SOPA was the Stop Online Piracy Act. It was this dystopian nightmare bill that would have let the government completely censor the web and nuke websites over mere copyright claims.

The entire internet literally threw a tantrum and blacked out sites like Wikipedia and Reddit just to kill it.

The absolute funniest part of this new drama is that Lofgren was one of the loudest politicians fighting against SOPA back in her hero era to save the open web. Now she is literally the one leading the charge to block sites. Love a good character assassination for us.

Then you have another rep named Issa who has a competing bill floating around. His big brain idea is to set up specialized piracy judges.

But if a rightsholder accidentally blocks an innocent site they get slapped with a 250k penalty. Honestly a rare W penalty from a politician but the whole concept is still unhinged government overreach. Lawmakers are probably gonna try and sneak this entire mess into some random omnibus spending package before Tillis retires in 2027 so nobody notices. Classic.

Are we cooked and heading back to the dark ages of the internet or is DNS blocking just a minor speedbump that any middle schooler can bypass by changing their wifi settings in 5 seconds ?
