Text: CBP officers recently made a significant seizure, intercepting a shipment containing 40 genuine ancient coins that were falsely declared. The package was mis-manifested deceptively which raised suspicions and was referred.
Upon examination, officers discovered the true nature of the contents. Photos were sent to a subject matter expert who confirmed the coins were indeed genuine antiquities.
The shipment was seized for smuggling due to the false invoice, highlighting attempts to illicitly traffic cultural heritage.
While 3 other "old looking objects" in the shipment were determined to be fakes and released, the 40 genuine ancient coins are now secured as evidence. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) has been notified as this case underscores the global fight against the illegal trade of cultural property.
CBP remains vigilant in protecting our nation's borders from illicit goods, including valuable historical artifacts that are often stolen or illegally exported from their countries of origin.
