What do you think of these results for 1,800 hours of comprehensible input?
This is an interesting case of a guy who has followed the comprehensible input/immersion method almost ‘religiously’ and with complete faith in the process.
He explains his methods in his update videos. I know for the first 1000+ hours he did no output, no grammar, no active study of any kind whatsoever, etc. He truly followed the recommendations that we hear so often.
It will sound harsh but the results in this case are clearly very underwhelming. I think that anyone who dedicates 1800 hours to a Romance language should attain far better results than this.
I’d be interested to hear your opinions on this and what you think of following a ‘pure’ CI approach.
I started out as a big believer in such an approach, but over time I began to doubt a little bit. I think active study/learning grammar in moderation can be tremendously helpful and can help you reach language goals so much faster and with minimal downsides.
I’m currently learning French and probably 99% of my routine consists of comprehensible input, but even just that 1% of active study and grammar is really valuable imo. I can learn and understand a grammar rule in a matter of minutes (which, in turn, makes my subsequent input more comprehensible, thus facilitating more learning, etc), whereas it may have taken me months to understand that grammar rule organically through input.
What are your thoughts on this video and on a pure approach?
