Thoughts on Vega-Tables releasing as the lead single for Smile in early 1967?
I know Van Dyke Parks was against the idea, as he thought “Vega-Tables” was one of their weaker songs, and yes, when compared to something like “Wonderful” or “Surf’s Up” I can see why he would say that. “Vega-Tables” may have also been a little too goofy and childish to succeed as a mainstream pop single.
However, on the other hand, I can see what Brian was thinking. “Vega-Tables” is certainly one of the poppier songs on the album, and definitely one of the songs that fits the “Smile” title most appropriately. I have a hard time thinking of other songs on Smile that would’ve made better singles, as they’re all mostly album tracks. “Vega-Tables” at least some really catchy pop hooks that songs like “Cabin Essence” or “Surf’s Up” lack.
What do y’all think? Would “Vega-Tables” have been a good first Smile song to release to the general public in early 1967, or should Brian have prioritized another song?
