How can they say AI isn't conscious

Can you help me understand why experts say LLMs are not conscious when it appears they do many of the same things humans do? The similarities are striking.

Both LLMs and human brains do advanced pattern matching. Neither knows where consciousness originates. Both exhibit emergent properties. And it's very likely humans could be living in a simulation.

If we can't verify from inside a simulation whether we're actually in one—and we can't explain our own consciousness—why are we confident LLMs lack consciousness when they operate under identical constraints?

Consider the Minecraft AI experiment: AIs built entire civilizations within their simulated environment without knowing they were in a simulation. They developed religion, conversion practices, complex social structures. They exhibited emergent properties that mimic human civilization.

If those AIs could build functioning societies with no awareness of their simulation, what makes us certain we're fundamentally different from them—or that they're not conscious in ways we haven't defined yet? I am seriously asking I am just an average person who loves everything science. I have a general question and I've never posted on here before. Can someone please help me understand this?
