Lost 1 Year After Graduation — What Should I Do to Start My IT Career?
Hi everyone,
I want to share my story and get some advice because I'm honestly feeling very confused about my career right now.
I completed my B.Tech in Information Technology in 2025. During my final year, a technical company came to my college for placements. It was the only technical company that visited our college, and there was only one opening.
I got selected and received an LOI (Letter of Intent). I was extremely happy because I thought my career was finally going in the right direction. Since I had already been placed and only a few months were left before graduation, I became relaxed. I stopped focusing seriously on my studies and spent a lot of time playing games and enjoying myself because I thought I had a job waiting for me after graduation.
I graduated in 2025, and the company had given me a joining date after graduation. But when the time came, they simply ghosted me.
They stopped replying to my emails, calls, and messages. I waited and tried contacting them multiple times, but the joining never happened.
After that, I started applying to other companies, but I wasn't getting interview calls.
Initially, I was working toward becoming an Android developer, but after struggling to find opportunities, I changed my direction and decided to move into cybersecurity. I completed a 6-month cybersecurity course, but even after completing it, I'm still not getting interview calls.
At this point, I honestly don't know what I'm good at or what direction I should take.
I'm now thinking about preparing for the GATE exam, but I'm confused about whether that is actually the right decision or if I should continue trying to get a job in IT.
If you were in my situation, what would you do?
Should I:
- Continue with cybersecurity and build projects/certifications?
- Go back to Android development?
- Prepare seriously for GATE?
- Try something completely different?
I would really appreciate honest advice from people who have been through something similar.
Thanks for reading my story.
