Stem cell therapy for hair transplant — worth it or should I opt out?
Hey everyone,
I’m currently looking into getting a hair transplant and I came across a couple of clinics offering packages that includes one stem cell therapy + one PRP treatment as part of the procedure.
From what I understand, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is fairly common and has at least some clinical backing for supporting healing and possibly improving graft survival. But I’m a bit more unsure about the stem cell portion.
What I’ve read so far is that:
- There isn’t a huge amount of solid long-term clinical data on stem cell therapy for hair loss/hair transplants
- It’s still considered somewhat experimental in many places
- And I’ve also heard that stem cell treatments for hair loss are not fully FDA-approved yet (at least in the way some clinics advertise them)
That makes me a bit hesitant, because I don’t want to risk doing something that’s either not well-studied or not clearly proven to be safe and effective.
So I wanted to ask people here who may have more experience or knowledge:
- Is stem cell therapy actually effective as an add-on to a hair transplant?
- Is it considered safe in practice, or are there meaningful risks people don’t talk about?
- Or is this more of a marketing add-on that clinics use without strong evidence behind it?
- Would you personally opt out and just stick with the standard transplant + PRP?
Any insights or personal experiences would be really appreciated.
