As beautiful as the day I lost it - I reunited with my Ally after 2.5 years

Yesterday I was browsing local listings looking for a handheld PC and came across Ally Z1 Extreme that looked really familiar.

I looked at the pictures and checked an invoice from when I bought mine new in 2024 and compared the serial number, to my surprise it was my original ROG Ally.

Some stuff came up back then and I had to sell it after a few months. Never really wanted to lose it because I had also upgraded it to 1TB myself, which was actually the first and only time I have ever done an SSD upgrade.

Somehow 2.5 years later it ended up back in front of me. It had only changed hands twice and was still in great condition.

I bought it instantly. Everything was there even the original Corsair SSD box with the price on it.

Never thought I'd see my old Ally again, let alone actually get it back!

Went to CEX to trade in some games and left with a Lenovo Legion Go S! Need some help with installing SteamOS

Whenever I travel to Poland for vacation, I usually bring a few things to trade in for store credit and pick up whatever catches my eye.

This time I didn't own a handheld PC, and this seemed like a great deal. After trading in a few games, it only ended up costing me €100.

Last year I made a post about the SteamOS version because I picked one up at launch. Unfortunately I had to sell it a few months later.

Now I could use some advice about installing SteamOS on the Windows version.

I have a few questions:

  1. How is SteamOS performance on this device? I've seen some recent posts mentioning issues like the microSD card randomly unmounting and screen-related bugs. Are these still a problem?

  2. Are SteamOS updates being pushed regularly?

  3. I've read that the touchpad doesn't work after installing SteamOS. Is that still the case? Are there any other features that don't work, such as the RGB analog sticks or TDP controls?

  4. If I don't care about keeping Windows, can I simply flash SteamOS over it? I don't play games with anti-cheat, and I mainly use handhelds for emulation and single-player games.

  5. What's the best way to preserve my Windows license in case I ever want to go back? I don't really have a way to make a full backup.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
