Ancient Nalanda Mahavira University- Magadha (Bihar) 5th-12th Century
Established in the 5th century CE by Emperor Kumaragupta I of the Gupta Empire.
Attracted around 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers from Korea, Japan, China, Tibet, Mongolia, and Sri Lanka.
Taught Buddhism (both Mahayana and other schools), Vedic literature, logic, medicine (Ayurveda), mathematics, astronomy, and fine arts.
The legendary Chinese pilgrim-monk Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang) studied and taught here in the 7th century.
The monastic complex was sacked and burned down at the end of the 12th century (around 1193 CE) by invading forces led by Bakhtiyar Khilji, destroying its massive multi-story libraries.
The Ruins of Nalanda University are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring excavated red-brick monasteries, temples, and stairways like the Sariputta Stupa.
