A New AI Rule Has Been Added

Based on the discussion in this thread, I have decided to add a new rule discouraging the use of AI generated art. Please take a look at the community rules in the sidebar for more details. As for the use of generative AI in other areas, such as coding or writing, that is up to your own discretion.

There is no definitive way to know whether someone has used generative AI in a piece of work where it is not obvious so I encourage anyone who is heavily reliant on AI to instead learn how to code and create art themselves.

For those who my ask why specifically AI generated art will be heavily moderated but not code?

The art community has been consistently against AI generated art, the same cannot be said about the engineering community. Code and art are very different when it comes to expectations and concerns around reuse. Reusing and building upon existing code is a normal expectation in the industry. Copying and pasting code from Stackoverflow was at one point in time every programmers right of passage.

Now this does not mean engineers widely accept AI or don't have issues with data centers having a harmful impact on the environment. But if we are talking about AI generated code, most engineers are more concerned about people creating programs they don't fully understand, not necessarily that they used AI.

Recommended Mod Planning Tools

Creating mods becomes significantly easier when projects are planned and organized early. Whether you are building a mini décor set or a large gameplay overhaul, maintaining a structured workflow helps keep development manageable and makes future updates much easier to maintain.

Using Notion for Project Management

I recently started using Notion and have found it to be great for planning, organization, documentation, and development tracking. It also includes a website feature called Notion Sites, which allows you to create public pages.

I am currently working on my own public Notion site for people to download mods that may not be supported on the Steam Workshop, such as script mods or adult mods that may not be allowed on Steam either.

Alternatives. Notion can have a bit of a learning curve so some alternative tools to look into that also have free tiers is Trello and Asana.

Mod Categorization

I also recommend deciding how you want to categorize your mods early on. I am using the following high-level categorization:

  • Animation Pack — New custom animations, poses, idle behaviors, etc.
  • Content Pack — New swatches, furniture, décor, clothing, clutter, etc.
  • Gameplay Pack — New gameplay systems, mechanics, interactions, and behaviors.
  • Hybrid / Expansion Pack — New gameplay systems, custom assets, animations designed around a themed experience.
  • Override Pack — Replaces or modifies existing game visuals, behaviors, UI, or systems.
  • Utility Pack — New tools, fixes, optimizations, and quality-of-life improvements.

Using GitHub for Version Control

GitHub is a no-brainer for version control, backups, collaboration, and release management. I have always used GitHub, but some alternatives worth checking out are GitLab and Bitbucket.

Using Pinterest for References & Inspiration

For references and inspiration, I like to use Pinterest. I usually create a separate Pinterest board for every build and ParaMaker mod I plan to develop.

Also, having an ad blocker enabled and turning on the option to block AI-generated pins in your Pinterest settings makes navigating the site a much better experience.
