Career Pivot to MLS

Public health to Medical Lab Scientists

I have a bachelor’s in Public Health and have been working many years in public health but ultimately the pay is not great and an MPH seems to be not worth it. I was interested in nursing when I was younger but working in multiple hospitals in different departments, interacting with patients and seeing how admin works has left me very discouraged from nursing. I love lab work and might have to take some pre-reqs for MLS.

Have any of you made that career pivot? How was it?

Is an MPH worth it?

I bet this question is asked a lot. I have experience working as a surveillance investigator in a major city’s health department and know the role of an Epi in that position but movement within the health departments in my area are non existent since no one wants to retire and favoritism is rampant, Many young employees leave for that reason. I’ve been a Health inspector and worked at hospitals doing registration and now I certify birth certificates. I really want to go back to school and get my MPH in Epidemiology (I love it) and get a certificate/concentration in biostats or data analysis BUT I currently have No loans and I constantly hear about people pivoting careers. I want to be an IP! But are the loans worth it? Did you work during school? I’m 27 and feel stuck!
