Question about the relationship of The Judge and The Kid (Spoilers)

(Beware of spoilers for Blood Meridian)
I just finished Blood Meridian and I was intrigued be the atmosphere around The Judge when he sees The Kid. I wondered why he is always smiling, especially in chapter 1 after The Kid burned the hotel and the Judge turns his horse towards the Kid just to smile at him. But he does not even know the Kid yet. Same happened when they encountered this spanish-speaking fortune tellers or when the Judge butchers an animal in the dark and calls someone to help him and Tobin tries to stop the Kid. What do you think does the Judge see in the Kid. Maybe he sees something similar as he sees in birds (I remember he didn't like them). At least that would explain why he decided to hunt Tobin and the Kid later while letting Toadvine and Brown live. And why do you think Tobin told the Kid to shoot the Judge when he told the Kid about the Judge making gunpowder from scratch so enthusiastically earlier. I don't understand these things and would love to hear your interpretations
