can't convince me our food isn't a major part of the problem

I just returned from 2 weeks of unbridled joy in my beloved Ireland. while there I didn't track my food, I ate what I wanted and stopped when I'd had enough. I drank whiskey EVERY day (4-8oz), ate bread daily, had chips occasionally, a piece or two of chocolate every day, enjoyed a shared dessert after dinners and in all that time I gained.... 2.2lbs (and that's weighing this a.m. after 9 hours on a plane yesterday). I did my best to keep protein up, my water intake was way too low due to being on the move so much and not wanting to have to constantly find a toilet. we did walk quite a lot however my friend has some mobility issues so walks were not at a quick pace or more than 4km at a time. if I could live there I would. brought 2 loaves of Irish bread home to continue to enjoy.
