The Myth of Starting A True Freshman Quarterback: Maybe it's not the kiss of death we thought

I started looking for answers about Tennessee's 2026 QB situation.

Three weeks later, I had a database of 31 impactful true freshman quarterbacks from 21 Power 5 schools dating back to 1975, who started at least six games as a TF.

The results challenged what we've heard about starting a freshman quarterback.

Key Findings:

  • 14 of 31 started the season opener
  • 26 of 31 (83.9%) TF QBs had winning records
  • The 14 5-stars went 103-45 (69.6%) in their TF starts
  • Only one 5-star quarterback posted a losing record
  • True Freshmen have covered at 56.2% ATS since 1994
  • Teams with Top-25 defenses dramatically outperformed teams with defenses ranked 50th or worse
  • 9 of the 31 TF QBs are from the last two years (2024, 2025)
