Introduction

I was walking through the streets near the square, heading to school.

I absentmindedly looked at the shop windows: elegant clothes, colorful shoes, stationery items, and even medicines. Everything seemed so normal… until I stopped in front of one particular window.

It was a bookstore.

Behind the glass were displayed the books written by my favorite author. I stood still, staring at them while thinking back to her wonderful stories. Adventures filled with mystery, courage, and distant worlds…

For a moment, I wished with all my heart that I could step inside one of those stories.

I was already daydreaming, imagining what it would be like… when suddenly I snapped back to reality.

The clock.

I was late for school!!!

I started running at full speed, trying to make up for lost time.

But maybe it’s better to start from the beginning.

My name is Haiko Kagami. I’m 15 years old, I attend the second year of high school, and I’m half Japanese and half Italian.

When I was little, I lived in Japan.

I was eight years old when, during an ordinary school day, I met someone who would change everything.

It was a sunny day during recess.

I was walking around the courtyard when I heard sobbing.

I stopped.

Someone was crying.

I followed the sound until I found her: a little girl curled up in a corner, her head hidden between her knees. She had brown hair, just like mine, and her whole body was shaking with tears.

I sat down beside her without saying anything.

She didn’t seem to want to talk.

I raised a hand to place it on her shoulder… but hesitated.

Maybe it was better not to.

“What happened?” I finally asked, with all the tact a child my age could have.

“Go away…” she replied, bursting into even louder tears.

This time, I gently placed a hand on her shoulder and moved a little closer. I brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

“What happened?” I repeated softly.

She didn’t answer, but she looked up at me curiously.

“My name is Haiko. My father is Japanese and my mother is Italian…” I said, trying to make her feel comfortable.

I saw her give a small smile. I handed her a tissue.

“Thank you…” she whispered, wiping away her tears. “Sorry for being rude… My name is Emma.”

“Nice to meet you! I’m Haiko!” I replied immediately, starting to talk nonstop. “Are you Italian? Because I’m half Italian too and your name doesn’t sound Japanese and—”

“Yes, I’m Italian,” she said gently and shyly.

“Would you like to become my friend?”

Her eyes lit up. “Of course.”

At that moment, the school bell rang.

“I have to go! See you tomorrow!” I said, getting up. Then I turned around at the last moment. “Tomorrow I’ll bring you a little gift!”

“Bye! See you tomorrow!” she replied.

From that day on, we met every recess in the school courtyard.

The next day, I gave her a purple bracelet identical to mine. A best friends bracelet.

We talked about everything.

For the first time in my life, I was truly able to open up to someone.

At the end of the school year, we graduated from elementary school together.

“Emma…” I said.

“Yes, Haiko?” She looked at me worriedly. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing…” I tried to smile, but I felt tears rising to my eyes. I hugged her tightly. “Tomorrow I’m leaving… I’m moving to Italy.”

I burst into tears. “I’ll miss you.”

“I’ll miss you too…” she replied, holding me close.

“I’ll write you letters… and send you lots of postcards,” I added through my tears.

“Me too.”

That evening, my parents gave me a necklace with a beautiful blue flower inside it.

They told me it was a family heirloom and that I would have to protect it at all costs.

And so I did.

But let’s get back to us.
