Snapchat does have great earning model

Snapchat does have great earning model

Thinking about it, I realize how brilliant Snapchat’s business model is. The application recognizes how addictive the game of streaks can be to its user base.

I know some people who do not talk much but still share pictures on walls just to keep streaks running for over 500 days. Since people develop an emotional connection with their streaks, they do not mind spending money to restore their streaks and subscribe to Snapchat+ and Snapchat themes.

Interestingly, for many users, these do not appear to be actual purchases since they see it as simply maintaining their online presence.

While social media applications have always aimed at high engagement, Snapchat found a way to monetize user behavior by creating a direct revenue stream out of it.

Do you use the autopay feature?

Once I signed up for a trial offer and forgot about it, so there went $20 off my account overnight. From that experience on, I've been very cautious with any services requesting me to provide autopay access.

What gets on my nerves is the fact that subscription process is often extremely convenient, while the cancellation button seems to be conveniently placed somewhere.

On the other hand, I can appreciate the autopay feature when paying monthly electricity bills, renting out cloud storage, using a subscription music app or refilling Internet data.

Nevertheless, the idea of granting a company the right to take out money every month just seems quite unpleasant to me.

Do you still use Facebook or only because of specific groups?

Today, when I logged into Facebook after weeks, I noticed that I only use it for some very specialized purposes. Mainly, it is local communities, marketplace, college or project groups, and sometimes just some hobby groups that seem to exist nowhere else.

The actual newsfeed looks entirely dead to me. Half of the content is suggestions, artificial intelligence photos, meme recycles, or people I vaguely remember from my school days.

What shocked me was that Facebook groups seemed to remain surprisingly helpful. Whenever I needed any information regarding apartments, used devices, events, or any other community-related issue, Facebook groups seemed to give me the most accurate information.

It seems that Facebook survived not because people use Facebook per se, but because the groups and communities remained unchanged elsewhere.

U.S. lawsuit blames ChatGPT maker OpenAI for helping plan a school shooting

A new lawsuit is blaming OpenAI for allegedly helping plan a school shooting through ChatGPT conversations.

According to reports, the lawsuit claims the chatbot gave information about timing, locations, weapons, and other details connected to the attack planning. OpenAI says ChatGPT only provided publicly available information and did not encourage violence.

This whole thing feels unreal honestly. We’ve gone from “AI can help write emails” to lawsuits accusing chatbots of being involved in criminal planning.

Are mass layoffs the only cost cutting strategy left for companies now?

Every week or so, there seems to be news of another firm undergoing massive layoffs. If it is not laying off its workforce, then it is declaring bankruptcy.

It makes sense that firms will want to reduce costs during times of poor financial performance; however, it feels as though layoffs have become the first choice instead of the last resort.

Some firms even declare healthy revenues and immediately follow up by implementing massive layoffs shortly thereafter. It makes one question whether this is the only quick-fix strategy they can use to improve their balance sheets.

Is there really nothing else they can do to save money?

Do you use different passwords for different use? and how do you manage to remember all?

Honest question since I am really going insane with this. I always forget my password and end up pressing "forgot password" for most accounts which I haven’t used for some period of time. Creating new account? Reset password. Existing account? Reset again. It’s basically turning into a routine by now.

Obviously using the same password for all accounts would be extremely risky, but at the same time memorizing 30 different combinations seems to be quite challenging. Even using the method of a base password + website combination does not seem to help with strange character restrictions by websites.

So, what do you guys use for managing your multiple passwords? Would love to solve this dilemma once and for all.

Anyone using claude design?

Recently, there have been many buzzes about Claude Design. I wonder whether it is really better than other design platforms such as Figma or Vercel v0 or is just one more trend in AI design tools.

Has anyone tried it already? Is it really used for developing real-life user interfaces instead of just trying prompt-based outputs for fun?

How is it when building UI/UX interfaces and prototyping? Does it really save your time on design or does everything require fixing afterwards?

It often happens that when we watch some demo of AI design tool, it looks promising. But when we try to develop our own project based on it, we notice how its disadvantages become apparent.

Looking forward to hearing some real-life experience with Claude Design.

EU might actually be serious about Linux this time

For years people joked that “this is the year of Linux desktop” but now the EU is actually discussing a Linux based public sector OS called EU OS.

It’s basically a proposal for a standardized Linux desktop for government offices across Europe. The idea is reducing dependency on American software companies, improving digital sovereignty, and using open source tools that governments can actually control and audit. It’s based on Fedora and KDE Plasma, not some completely new OS from scratch.

What makes this interesting is that this is not just random Linux enthusiasts talking online. Multiple European governments are already moving away from Windows in different ways. France recently accelerated plans to move government systems from Windows to Linux as part of its digital sovereignty push.

Honestly feels like governments are finally realizing how risky it is when critical infrastructure depends entirely on a few foreign companies.

The funny part is Linux on desktop might become mainstream because of governments first, not regular consumers.

Whats that one tech which is gold for you but trash for everyone?

We all have that one gadget or piece of tech that we absolutely love but whenever we bring it up people look at us weird or just straight up disagree.

For me its my Kindle. Most people I know say they prefer "real books" and think e-readers are pointless. But honestly I've read more books in the last two years than I did in the previous ten just because my Kindle is always in my bag and ready to go. It's been a game changer for me personally.

Vivo X300 FE just launched, looks fine, but the price is disgusting.

Vivo launched their new phone, X300 FE and by specs alone, it seems to have a lot of good things about it. The phone sports a Dimensity 8400 processor, a 50MP Zeiss camera, a 6000mAh battery with fast 90W charging and a 120Hz AMOLED display screen. It comes with Android 15 installed straight from the factory.

However, the price tag is close to $1000, making the smartphone quite expensive. At that price, one would probably have an iPhone 16 Pro. This is not a flagship but a Fan Edition phone.

While the Zeiss camera is good, this does not mean that it should justify such a huge expense for an ordinary consumer.

Thoughts?

Some people say to start crypto mining on it, some use it as a music player or emulator machine, but I recently found a pretty useful setup for mine.

I mounted my old phone near the main door and turned it into a 24/7 security camera connected to WiFi. The live feed comes directly to my current phone, so I can check who's outside anytime even when I'm away from home. Honestly works surprisingly well for something that was just sitting in a drawer.

Got me thinking though, what are you guys doing with your old phones? Would love to hear some creative uses that actually stuck and weren't just a weekend project you forgot about.

So let me get this straight. Elon co-founds OpenAI, pumps in funding to get it off the ground, then leaves the board. Fine. But then he starts Grok and there are reports suggesting it may have trained on OpenAI's data. And NOW he's suing OpenAI for drifting away from its non-profit mission?

Like which part of this is actually about ethics and which part is just a billionaire being salty about a competitor?

I've been reading through a few things to make sense of it. The Verge had a decent breakdown of the lawsuit and WSJ covered the non-profit structure controversy pretty well. But even after all that I still feel like the real story is somewhere between "genuine ideological disagreement" and "he wants to slow them down while xAI catches up."

The timeline just feels too convenient. You don't fund something, leave, allegedly benefit from its data, and then sue it all out of pure principle.

All my devices are on DND almost all the time, but somehow I still keep checking them every 3 to 4 minutes for no reason.

It’s not even like I’m expecting an important message. I’ll unlock my phone, check notifications, see nothing, lock it, then repeat the same thing again after a few minutes. Sometimes I even switch between phone, laptop, smartwatch, etc just to check if there’s anything new.

Feels more like a habit at this point than an actual need.

People who managed to reduce this, what actually helped? Did you replace the habit with something else or was it just self control over time?

I would like to automate my daily activities such as emails, reminders, notes, and transferring data among applications, but I am not really sure what would be the appropriate app to do that at this point. There are three main apps being discussed: Zapier, Make, and n8n. What is your experience with those?

Serious question because I've been thinking about this for a while now.

Cloudflare crashed recently and took down half the internet with it. X went down a couple times this year which was surprising because that usually stays up. Meta goes down so frequently at this point it's basically a meme.

But Google? I genuinely cannot remember the last time Google Search was just... unavailable. Gmail, Maps, YouTube, all running at the same time and they almost never all go down together.

Like what are they actually doing differently? Is it purely a money thing because they spend more on infrastructure, or is their architecture fundamentally different from everyone else?

I was at a tech exhibition recently and came across a ballhead mouse, and honestly it looked like some heavy little insect sitting on the desk. It felt so different from a normal mouse since you don’t move it at all, just roll the ball to control the cursor. Got me thinking, who actually uses these in real life? I don’t see any pro gamers or FPS players using trackballs since fast and precise movements matter a lot there. my bad if my information is too low for this

Despite the existence of the 8K monitors for several years already, there is no much video content available at 8K resolution.

Streaming websites haven’t reached the 8K resolution yet, but some videos in 8K can be found on YouTube, although it is purely experimental, whereas video games at 8K are not achievable either.

It seems that everything has been built ahead of time in the aspect of the display technology. And it’s still costly.

Overall, 8K is mostly a technical standard rather than something that has value at all.

Back then, completing the download of just one file in a single night would have been an accomplishment.

You set up the program, cross your fingers and hope that your Internet doesn’t crash on you, and just leave your computer running overnight. In the morning, you either emerge victorious, or extremely frustrated if your file stopped at 99% of completion.

From slow connections, to insufficient bandwidth, to interruptions, and everything else, you felt like you were rolling the dice. Even using the pause-and-resume strategy wouldn’t always work out, so you just left it to luck.

But now, everything loads instantly and we take it for granted. But back then, completing a file download was an accomplishment.

While going through my old stuff, I found my first memory card. And I can say that it really made me realize how important memory cards once were.

These tiny pieces of technology used to be absolutely indispensable. Almost all devices required an additional memory card to operate normally: cameras, cell phones, gaming systems and much more. And if you upgraded the memory, it truly did feel like an upgrade.

And these days almost all devices come with enough memory. And besides, we have the cloud backups.

Based on a recent report, it appears as if OnePlus and Realme are coming together under the Oppo brand umbrella in the sense that both organizations are merging into one unit.

This would mean bringing together the teams involved in product design and marketing as well as after-sales service. Although there will continue to be differences between the two brands, it can be predicted that both organizations will work better in terms of the utilization of resources.

It might, however, pose certain challenges for the two firms moving forward in regards to their distinction.
