HS Student with BIG behaviors- HITTING

We have a student at my site that has pretty big behaviors. Mostly self injurious but also hits staff all day and sometimes, students. Previous site did not ask much of said student so the behaviors didn’t fully manifest until the student was moved to our site. Student is non verbal and things have not gotten better this entire year as far as behaviors, progress, etc.

The previous site did not tell parents about the students behaviors, when they had them, so this year has been a shock when the teacher has told parents about behaviors. Parents didn’t really believe it and asked what the school is doing to the student to make the behaviors so bad.

This teacher is WONDERFUL and has gone to the ends of the earth for this student but parents are now blaming the teacher and being mean to them.

Reason I’m writing this is because I get hit every time I work with this student and they are typically fully dysregulated. These are not taps, they are full open palm hits to the chest or back. I usually take a step back until RBT, paras, teacher can calm the student down. When can I say I’m not working with them anymore because I’m not going to continue to be hit? I like my job and the work I do, but I’m not going to the ends of the earth. I work to live not the opposite.

Meeting is being held soon about alternate placement but parents have pushed back on that all year.
