I had to change my loctician!
I discovered my first loctician on StyleSeat, and honestly, it was her pricing that caught my eye. She had a ton of pictures showcasing her work, which made me excited to meet her. When I did, she was incredibly warm and friendly, almost like a family member. The atmosphere in her shop was inviting, and I felt right at home as she did my comb coils.
After some research, I decided I wanted to start my loc journey with extensions. I asked her if she could work with my hair length, and she confidently suggested faux locs. However, they weren’t my best look, and the process turned out to be pretty painful. After two weeks, I knew I needed to switch to traditional locs to bypass that awkward phase, but in the process, I damaged my hair and ended up with traction alopecia.
I began to doubt my loctician’s skills and started searching for someone new. Unfortunately, I was often told they wouldn’t take me on as a client, which was understandable, so I felt stuck. I kept my traditional locs for two months, learning about things like loc-to-hair ratio and hair density—information my loctician didn’t seem to know. I even asked her about braiding and banding, but she was clueless. Plus, my locs started slipping out, and I learned about issues like product buildup and over-manipulation, none of which she was aware of.
After my experiences, I felt I had no choice but to stay with her. Eventually, I decided to switch to Microlocs, which she created by hand. I also began treating my alopecia with Minoxidil and microneedling. I had my first set of Microlocs for four months, but then I switched to premade ones in March. Those unraveled so much that I found myself visiting her weekly, which was incredibly frustrating. I even sent her videos to show her how to fix the issues, but nothing seemed to work.
At that point, I started to wonder if she really knew much about Microlocs. My husband kept encouraging me to find a new loctician, but I was hesitant. I had a few consultations that ended up ghosting me, which was disheartening. Finally, I had another consultation that felt like a breath of fresh air! The new loctician explained the fixing process thoroughly, making me feel comfortable with my decision.
Yesterday was the day of my appointment! She started on time (something my previous loctician never did), worked diligently without taking breaks, and even provided valuable aftercare tips. I can confidently say I’m not going back to my old loctician! What a relief to finally share my journey!
