Desperately looking for a job
Black female veteran here trying to break into the HVAC industry in Houston and honestly feeling discouraged sometimes.
I served 7 years active duty in Navy intelligence, earned my bachelor’s degree after the pandemic, and spent the last few years working odd jobs including teaching and the post office while trying to figure out my next move. In 2025, I decided to transition into the trades and I’m currently enrolled in the HVACR program at San Jacinto College. I’ll receive my certification in December.
I’m motivated, dependable, and ready to work. I’m interested in both commercial and residential HVAC and looking for helper or apprentice opportunities in the Houston area.
Sometimes I wonder if my background throws employers off — military intel isn’t exactly a traditional path into HVAC. Being a veteran doesn’t automatically open doors like people think it does. And honestly, sometimes I wonder if being a woman in the trade makes it harder too.
I’ve tried going through Union 211, but it wasn’t the direction I wanted to take. I’m really just looking for a company willing to give me an opportunity to learn, grow, and prove myself.
If anyone knows of companies hiring helpers/apprentices or has advice, I’d truly appreciate it.
