Apt Pupil is King’s bleakest story
For the sole reason that it really could have happened. Just finished it and was left speechless after that last line. Took me a while to process what I just read.
Stories like Pet Cemetery and Revival are certainly bleak, but for me there was always a barrier in those as it was clearly based on a fictional premise. With Apt Pupil, the horror is entirely human and plausible. It almost felt like anyone that grew up with a reclusive elderly neighbor could have pictured the story playing out just like that. No good guys, no moral of the story. Just the worst of human nature.
