PS 87 & General Preschool Questions

We're moving to the UWS this summer (July or August). We don't know the exact address yet, but are targeting the 70s or 80s.

My issue is, ideally I'd love to be within the range for PS87 or maybe PS 9, but from what I've read, as of this year William Sherman will no longer have a preschool option. We have a child who is currently 4 and won't turn 5 until next January, so he should be starting preschool this year. We were hoping to avoid paying for daycare or private school for this year (I had thought the elementary school we were zoned for would have a preschool option).

We're coming from out of state, so I'm trying to understand the NYC school system. So a few questions:

  1. Where are parents in the ps87 range sending kids for preschool this year?

  2. Are there free public preschools? And if so are you guaranteed certain ones based on home address?

  3. Are preschools in NYC typically full-time or part-time (my husband and I both work so we need full time).

  4. Is there a better (not astronomically priced option) for 4 year olds until he starts kindergarten next year?

  5. I'd welcome any other tips or info. Thanks!
